The 2027 Social Security COLA Is 3.6% — What It Means for Your Retirement Income
Every October, retirees across Northwest Indiana and Greater Chicagoland wait for one number: how much their Social Security checks will change next year. On October 14, 2026, the Social Security Administration released it. For 2027, benefits will rise 3.6%.
It is the largest increase since 2023. For many of the pre-retirees and retirees our firm works with, it is also a good moment to look at how Social Security fits into the rest of their retirement income.
Quick Answer: The 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is 3.6%. According to the SSA, the average retirement benefit will rise by about $75 per month, from roughly $2,095 to $2,170. The increase applies to nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries starting with January 2027 payments. About 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will see their increase starting December 31, 2026.
What Is the Social Security COLA?
The cost-of-living adjustment is an annual increase to Social Security and SSI benefits. Its purpose is to help benefits keep their purchasing power as prices rise. The COLA is not a discretionary raise. It is set by a formula in the Social Security Act.
How the 2027 COLA Was Calculated
The SSA ties the COLA to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The calculation follows three steps:
1. Average the CPI-W for July, August, and September of the current year.
2. Compare that average with the same three months of the prior year.
3. The percentage increase becomes the next year's COLA.
Because the formula depends on September inflation data, the official COLA can't be known until mid-October. This year, the September CPI report and the SSA announcement were released on the same day.
For context, the 2026 COLA was 2.8%. The 2027 figure reflects inflation that has stayed above the Federal Reserve's 2% target for several years, including higher energy prices in 2026.
When Does the 2027 COLA Take Effect?
The increase applies to benefits payable for January 2027. Most Social Security beneficiaries will see it in the payments they receive starting in January. SSI recipients will see it earlier, starting with the payment issued on December 31, 2026.
The SSA typically mails COLA notices in early December. If you have a my Social Security account, you can usually view your notice online sooner.
What 3.6% Means in Dollars
The SSA estimates the average retired worker will receive about $75 more per month, or roughly $900 more over the year. Your own increase depends on your current benefit. The table below shows how a 3.6% increase applies at several benefit levels.
Figures are illustrative, before Medicare premium deductions or tax withholding, and rounded to the nearest dollar.
For married couples who both receive benefits, each spouse's benefit increases separately, so the household impact can be meaningfully larger.
A Quick Note on Medicare Part B
Most Social Security recipients age 65 and older have their Medicare Part B premium deducted directly from their benefit. That means the increase you actually see in your deposit may be smaller than the full 3.6%. The 2027 Part B premium has not been announced yet. It is typically released in mid-November.
Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, so this is a natural time to review both pieces together. We covered that in more detail in our article on [Medicare Open Enrollment as a retirement planning checkpoint]([LINK: Medicare Open Enrollment post URL]).
